SSU’s version of Barnes & Noble’s First Day® Complete program. Every undergraduate is enrolled automatically and charged $21.00 per unit for course-material access unless they opt out before the add/drop deadline. It is rental-first: most physical items must be returned at term’s end.
The per-unit price isn’t based on what your materials cost. The contract between Sonoma State Enterprises (SSE) and Barnes & Noble sets a single flat rate:
“…an average price across all courses” which applies “regardless of how many or whether course materials are being used in a particular course.” Amendment No. 1 §22(v)(1)
If your classes need less than the average, you pay the average anyway. That’s the gap this calculator closes.
SSE, the SSU auxiliary that holds the bookstore contract, receives a commission of 10% of gross course-material sales, a category the contract expressly defines to include bundle revenue §11.1 as amended. The per-unit price is set each year by agreement between SSE and Barnes & Noble, no later than March, effective the following fall §22(v)(5). The agreement contains no cap on price increases (none appears anywhere in the 56-page production) and excludes no programs §22(iii)(3): the student price has risen from $18.50 per unit in 2023 to $21.00 now.
It uses your own list as the source of truth. Sometimes the answer really is to stay in: single-use access codes usually can’t be bought used, and if your list includes a few of them, the bundle can win. The tool will tell you either way: if the answer is “keep the bundle,” it says that, loud and clear, at the same size as any other answer.
It reads what your list shows, has you confirm it, then finds real offers for your items in the open: every price it fills in names its store, links to the store’s page for that item, and can be replaced with your own number in one tap. It never asserts a price it can’t show you. Access codes are the one exception: stores don’t usually sell those used, so when your own capture shows a listed price the tool uses that, labeled as yours. This site never asks for SSU credentials. Pasted text is read entirely in your browser. Captures are sent once through this site’s parser to an outside automated reading service that extracts your item list (course, title, format, ISBN, and any printed price), and this site never stores them. Price lookups send only the ISBNs from your confirmed list, nothing about you or your courses. When your page shows no ISBN for an item, its title and author (never anything about you) are matched against OpenLibrary, a public library catalog, and the match is shown to you for confirmation. No analytics, no tracking, no accounts.
